moon halos
Circles around moons
Moon halos are luminous rings that appear around the moon, caused by light refracting through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds.
The most common type forms a circle about 22 degrees from the moon.
Folklore associates moon halos with approaching storms, which has some meteorological basis since the cirrus clouds that create them often precede weather fronts: There's a halo around the moon tonight—rain by morning.
