compass bearings

North, south, east, west

Compass bearings are directions expressed as angles measured clockwise from north, typically in degrees from 0° to 360°.

A bearing of 90° points due east, 180° due south.

Navigators use compass bearings to plot courses and locate positions: Take a compass bearing on that peak and we'll triangulate our location.

The term also appears figuratively for general orientation or direction: I've lost my compass bearings on this project.
