woad

Ancient Celtic pigment

Woad is a plant that yields a blue dye, historically used to color textiles and, famously, to paint the skin of ancient Britons before battle.

The dye was extracted from the plant's leaves through fermentation.

Before indigo became widely available, woad was Europe's primary source of blue pigment: warriors daubed in woad.
