scale insects
Waxy tree pests
Scale insects are small, sap-sucking pests that attach themselves to plants and often appear as waxy or shell-like bumps on stems, leaves, and fruit.
The name comes from the protective scale or covering that many species produce, which makes them look less like insects than like growths on the plant.
They can cause significant damage to ornamental plants and crops by weakening their hosts and secreting honeydew that promotes mold growth.
The citrus trees were infested with scale insects.
