Desegregation struggle period
The civil rights era refers to the period of American history, roughly the 1950s through 1960s, when Black Americans and their allies organized to end legal segregation and secure voting rights, equal protection, and integration.
The era produced landmark legislation and iconic figures: My grandmother marched during the civil rights era.
The phrase sometimes extends to include parallel movements for other groups.
