chumra

Beyond the requirement

Chumra is a Jewish religious term for a stringency—a stricter interpretation of religious law than technically required.

Observant Jews may adopt chumrot (plural) as a personal practice or community standard: He keeps a chumra of waiting six hours between meat and dairy, though three would suffice.

The term can carry slight disapproval when the stringency seems excessive or performative.
