Geonim

Medieval Talmudic authorities

Geonim is the plural of gaon, a title given to the heads of the two major Jewish academies in Babylonia from roughly the 6th to 11th centuries.

These scholars were the supreme authorities on Jewish law and religious practice during their era.

The Geonim shaped the development of the Talmud's interpretation and established legal precedents still influential today.

The period is called the Geonic period: The responsa literature flourished under the Geonim.
