chorales

Four-part church songs

Chorales are hymn tunes, particularly those associated with German Protestant worship.

The term often refers specifically to the harmonized settings Bach and other composers created for congregational singing.

By extension, a chorale is any slow, stately hymn-like composition: The brass section opened with a majestic chorale.

A chorale can also mean a choir or choral society.
