homophony

Same sound, different

Homophony describes sounds that are the same.

In linguistics, homophonous words sound identical but differ in meaning or spelling: *to*, *too*, and *two* are homophones.

In music, homophony is a texture where one melodic line dominates while other voices provide harmonic accompaniment—contrasted with polyphony, where multiple independent melodies sound simultaneously.
