gospel hymns
Soulful religious music
Gospel hymns are Christian songs that blend traditional hymn structure with the emotional, personal style of gospel music.
They emerged in 19th-century American revivalism, emphasizing salvation, grace, and spiritual testimony.
Unlike formal church hymns, gospel hymns tend toward accessible melodies and refrains meant for congregational singing: The choir opened with old gospel hymns like "Amazing Grace" and "Blessed Assurance".
