chipotles

Dried smoked peppers

Chipotles is the plural of chipotle, a dried and smoked jalapeño pepper used in Mexican and Tex-Mex cooking.

The peppers have a distinctive smoky heat and appear whole, ground, or packed in adobo sauce: I added a couple of chipotles to the stew.

The name comes from Nahuatl.
