charge-offs

Uncollectible loan removals

Charge-offs are debts that a creditor has written off as unlikely to be collected, typically after prolonged nonpayment.

When a credit card company or lender declares a charge-off, they remove the debt from their books as an asset and report it as a loss.

The debt doesn't disappear—it may be sold to collection agencies, and the charge-off damages the borrower's credit report: Three charge-offs tanked her credit score.
