Drunken Sailor

Tipsy man overboard

A drunken sailor is someone intoxicated aboard ship, traditionally the subject of a sea shanty asking what to do with him "early in the morning." The phrase evokes the stereotype of sailors on shore leave, spending wages on drink.

To spend money like a drunken sailor is to spend freely and recklessly, with no thought of tomorrow.
