chainstitch

Interlocking loop technique

A chainstitch is a looped embroidery or sewing stitch that forms a chain-like pattern, each loop catching the next.

It creates a decorative raised line used for outlines, filling, and ornamental work: The collar was embroidered in chainstitch.

As a verb, to chainstitch is to sew using this technique.

Machine chainstitching, common in hemming jeans, unravels easily if a thread breaks—pull the right spot and the whole seam comes undone.
