Central defensive position
Centre-back is a defensive position in football (soccer), stationed in the middle of the back line directly in front of the goalkeeper.
Centre-backs are primarily responsible for stopping opposing attackers, winning aerial duels, and clearing the ball from dangerous areas.
Modern centre-backs are also expected to distribute the ball and initiate attacks from the back.
The position is sometimes called central defender.
