wing-back

Attacking flank player

A wing-back is a defensive player in football (soccer) who operates along the flank with significant attacking responsibilities, essentially combining the roles of fullback and winger.

The position requires exceptional stamina since wing-backs must cover the entire length of the pitch, defending deep and pushing forward to deliver crosses.

In furniture, a wing-back chair features high sides that extend from the back to create enclosed, protective "wings" flanking the sitter's head.
