slide-tackle

Leg-first defensive sweep

A slide-tackle is a maneuver in soccer where a player drops to the ground and slides, typically feet-first, to kick the ball away from an opponent.

When executed cleanly, it's a legitimate defensive play; when it catches the opponent's legs instead of the ball, it often draws a foul or card.

The term also works as a verb: He slide-tackled the striker just outside the box.
