ceiling joists

Horizontal support beams

Ceiling joists are horizontal beams that span the width of a room, supporting the ceiling below and often the floor or attic space above.

They run parallel to each other, typically spaced sixteen or twenty-four inches apart, and attach to the top plates of walls or to larger structural beams.

The electrician drilled through the ceiling joists to run new wiring.
