composite material
Engineered hybrid material
A composite material is an engineered substance made by combining two or more constituent materials with different properties, producing something stronger or more useful than either component alone.
The classic example is fiberglass—glass fibers embedded in plastic resin.
Carbon fiber, plywood, and concrete are also composites.
The term appears in engineering, manufacturing, and materials science contexts: The aircraft's wings are made from advanced composite materials.
