plaster ceiling

Smooth white overhead

A plaster ceiling is an interior ceiling surface made by applying wet plite to a framework of wooden laths or metal mesh, where it hardens into a smooth, durable finish.

Before drywall became standard in the mid-twentieth century, plaster ceilings were the norm in residential and commercial construction.

They're valued for their solidity and often feature decorative moldings or medallions: The old house still has its original plaster ceilings.
