carbide lamp

Acetylene flame headlamp

A carbide lamp produces light by burning acetylene gas, generated when water drips onto calcium carbide pellets inside the lamp.

Before electric headlamps, miners and cavers relied on carbide lamps for their bright, steady flame: The carbide lamp on his helmet cast shadows on the cave walls.

Also called an acetylene lamp.
