gas light
Pre-electric street lamp
Gas light is illumination produced by burning gas, typically through a fixture designed for that purpose.
Before electric lighting became standard in the early twentieth century, gas lamps lit homes and streets: The dim gas light flickered in the hallway.
The term also refers to the fixture itself. (For the verb meaning to psychologically manipulate, see gaslight.)
