cabala
Veiled ancient knowledge
Cabala is an alternative spelling of kabbala, the tradition of Jewish mystical interpretation of scripture that seeks hidden meanings in sacred texts.
The word has extended to mean any secret or esoteric doctrine, or a group united by such knowledge.
By further extension, a cabal is a secretive group engaged in plotting, though this spelling has become its own word.
He dismissed their theories as mere cabala.
