bully beef

Preserved corned beef

Bully beef is canned corned beef, particularly associated with military rations from the late 19th century through World War II.

The term comes from the French *bœuf bouilli* (boiled beef) and was standard fare for British and Commonwealth soldiers.

Though less common today, the term persists in British English and former British colonies.

The troops complained about eating bully beef for the third day straight.
