botanical name

Latin plant designation

A botanical name is the formal Latin or Latinized scientific name for a plant, following international nomenclature rules.

Unlike common names, which vary by region and language, botanical names provide universal identification: *Taraxacum officinale* is the dandelion everywhere.

The system uses genus and species: I looked up the botanical name for lavender.
