neotype
Stand-in holotype
A neotype is a specimen selected to serve as the defining example of a species when the original type specimen has been lost or destroyed.
The term belongs to biological taxonomy, where having a physical reference specimen matters for classification.
Scientists designate a neotype only when the original is unrecoverable and a replacement is needed to stabilize the species name.
