bootup

Computer's cold start

Bootup is the process of starting a computer or electronic device—powering on the hardware and loading the operating system into memory.

The term comes from "bootstrapping," the idea of pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps, since the computer must load the very programs that enable it to load programs.

Also written as two words or hyphenated: boot up, boot-up.

The bootup took forever after the update.
