Background processes are programs or tasks running on a computer without direct user interaction or visible windows.
They handle system maintenance, updates, and services while you work on other things: My laptop was slow because too many background processes were eating up memory.
The term extends to any activity happening out of sight: She had background processes running in her mind while she listened.
