restore point
Digital safety checkpoint
A restore point is a saved snapshot of a computer system's state at a particular moment, used to roll back software, settings, or files if something goes wrong.
Operating systems create restore points automatically before updates or installations, and users can create them manually before risky changes: I made a restore point before installing the new driver.
The term occasionally extends metaphorically to any saved state one might return to.
