boom gate

Pivoting road barrier

A boom gate is a hinged bar that swings or pivots to block vehicle access—at parking lots, railroad crossings, toll booths, or secured entrances.

The bar raises to let vehicles through and lowers to stop them.

The term is more common in Australian and British English; Americans typically say barrier arm or gate arm.
