bombe

Molded icy treat

A bombe is a dome-shaped frozen dessert, typically made by lining a mold with ice cream or sorbet and filling the center with a different flavor or mousse.

The shape resembles an artillery shell, hence the French name.

In historical contexts, a bombe was also an electromechanical device used at Bletchley Park during World War II to decrypt German Enigma messages: The bombes ran through possible rotor settings until they found a match.
