plugboard

Wired connection matrix

A plugboard is a panel with an array of sockets that can be connected by patch cables to configure electrical circuits.

Early computers and telephone switchboards used plugboards to route signals or modify programs without changing hardware.

The term evokes an era when computing meant physically rewiring connections: The operator reconfigured the plugboard for the new calculation.
