cargo cult

Ritual awaiting airdrops

A cargo cult is a religious movement, originally observed in Melanesia, in which adherents perform rituals imitating Western technology and commerce—building mock airstrips, wooden airplanes, or radio equipment—believing these will summon material wealth from the gods or ancestors.

Extended to describe any practice that mimics the superficial forms of something successful without understanding the underlying principles: Their agile transformation was pure cargo cult—daily standups but no actual collaboration.
