flyover state

Between the coasts

A flyover state is a U.S. state in the middle of the country that coastal elites supposedly only see from airplane windows while traveling between New York and Los Angeles.

The term carries dismissive connotations—implying these regions lack cultural significance or sophistication: Politicians only care about flyover states during election years.

Sometimes reclaimed with defiant pride by Midwesterners.
