safe seat
Guaranteed electoral victory
A safe seat is an electoral district where one political party holds such a strong advantage that the outcome is virtually predetermined.
The incumbent or their party's candidate faces little risk of losing: She represents a safe seat, so she can focus on national issues rather than local campaigning.
The opposite is a marginal seat, where elections are competitive.
