toss-up state
Battleground electoral territory
A toss-up state is one where neither major political party has a clear advantage in an election, making the outcome genuinely uncertain.
These states receive intensive campaign attention and advertising because they could plausibly go either way: Florida and Pennsylvania were toss-up states in the final weeks.
Also called a swing state or battleground state.
