blue states
Left-leaning electoral regions
Blue states are U.S. states that reliably vote for Democratic candidates in presidential elections, contrasted with red states (Republican).
The color coding became standard after the 2000 election.
The term extends beyond voting patterns to suggest liberal politics and urban, coastal culture: She moved from Texas to a blue state.
A swing state or purple state is one that could go either way.
