early voting

Pre-election day casting

Early voting is casting a ballot before the official election day, during a designated period when polling places open ahead of schedule.

It reduces crowds on election day and accommodates voters who can't make it then: I took advantage of early voting to avoid the lines.

Rules vary by jurisdiction—some states offer weeks of early voting, others none at all.
