contested state
Electoral toss-up territory
A contested state is a U.S. state where election results are disputed or challenged, often through legal action, recounts, or allegations of irregularities: Lawyers descended on the contested states to monitor the recount.
The term overlaps with but differs from swing state—a swing state is competitive before voting; a contested state becomes so after results are challenged.
