blue light special
Retailer's flash sale
A blue light special is a limited-time in-store discount, originally from Kmart's practice of announcing surprise sales by activating a flashing blue light.
The phrase now refers broadly to any sudden bargain or, more figuratively, something cheap or hastily assembled: Their security system was a blue light special—cameras that didn't even record.
