A bleacher is a long bench for spectators, typically backless and arranged in rising tiers at sporting events or outdoor venues.
Almost always plural: the bleachers, sitting in the bleachers.
Bleacher seats are the cheap seats—uncovered, exposed to sun and weather, far from the action.
The term comes from the bleaching effect of sun on the wooden planks and on spectators sitting in them.
Separately, a bleacher is a person or chemical that bleaches—whitens fabric, paper, or hair.
