long position

Bought, not sold

A long position is an investment stance where you own an asset outright or have contracted to buy it, betting its value will rise.

The term distinguishes from a short position, where you profit if prices fall.

In everyday trading talk, being long simply means you've bought and are holding: I'm long on Apple stock.

The position is "long" because you hold it over time, waiting for appreciation.
