basket case
Totally falling apart
A basket case is someone in a state of nervous collapse or helpless dysfunction: I was a complete basket case before my interview.
The term originated as World War I slang for a soldier who had lost all four limbs and required transport in a basket.
Now it applies to any person, organization, or country unable to function: The company was a financial basket case.
