ball and socket joint

Hip's rotation mechanism

A ball and socket joint is an anatomical structure where a rounded end of one bone fits into a cup-shaped cavity of another, allowing movement in multiple directions.

The hip and shoulder are ball and socket joints.

The term also describes mechanical joints built on the same principle: The lamp has a ball and socket joint for positioning the head.
