backwind
Wind behind sails
Backwind describes wind deflected backward, especially in sailing when one sail blocks wind from reaching another, causing the leeward sail to fill from the wrong side.
A boat can deliberately backwind a sail to slow down or turn: She backwinded the jib to fall off the wind.
The term also appears in aviation for turbulent air behind an aircraft or obstacle.
