backflushing

Cleaning via reversed flow

Backflushing is reversing fluid flow through a system to clear blockages or accumulated debris.

In coffee machines, backflushing cleans espresso group heads by forcing water backward through the portafilter.

The technique applies broadly—pool filters, industrial equipment, even aquarium systems: The filter needs backflushing every few weeks.
