counterflow

Against the stream

Counterflow describes movement in the opposite direction to a main flow.

In engineering, counterflow systems run two fluids past each other in opposite directions for efficient heat exchange: counterflow heat exchangers.

The term appears in traffic contexts for lanes running against the primary direction, and metaphorically for trends or forces pushing back against prevailing currents: a counterflow of skepticism against the hype.
