authoress

Woman who writes

Authoress is an old-fashioned or disparaging term for a female author.

Like actress and poetess, it fell out of favor as gender-neutral terms became preferred.

Today it sounds either archaic or condescending: She bristled at being called an authoress rather than simply an author.
