bluestocking
Female literary scholar
A bluestocking is an intellectual or literary woman, especially one regarded as unfashionable or pedantic.
The term originated as mockery of women who attended 18th-century London literary salons, and retains a faintly disparaging edge—implying someone more interested in books than in feminine graces: She was dismissed as a bluestocking by the other society ladies.
