George Eliot
Victorian novelist pseudonym
George Eliot is the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), an English novelist whose works include *Middlemarch*, *Silas Marner*, and *The Mill on the Floss*.
She adopted a male pseudonym to ensure her writing would be taken seriously and to distance her literary reputation from her unconventional personal life.
Her novels are known for psychological depth and social realism.
